Welcome to Wolf Creek Retrievers. We are dedicated to training retrievers for hunting as well as for those that compete in AKC and UKC hunt tests. We understand that your retriever is not only a hunting companion, but a valued member of your family.

Hunt Tests are events held for retrievers which attempt to simulate actual hunting conditions. Retrievers passing a Hunt Test receive a "leg" or qualification toward their Hunt Test Title.

There are two organizations that hold hunt tests. The American Kennel Club "AKC", and United Kennel Club "UKC" are the two organizations and each organization has their own titles.

The AKC titles are (Junior Hunter (JH), Senior Hunter (SH), or Master Hunter (MH)). The titles becomes an actual part of their registered name and are listed at the end of there AKC registered name, i.e. C&C Sir Running Bear , M.H.

The UKC titles are (Started Hunter Retriever (SHR), Hunting Retriever (HR), or Hunting Retriever Champion (HRCH), Upland Hunter (UH), Grand Hunting Retriever Champion (GRHRCH)). The titles becomes an actual part of their registered name, and are listed at the front of there UKS registered name, i.e. HRCH UH C&C Sir Running Bear.

There is no difference in the training of retrievers used for Hunt tests vs. gundogs. The methods, concepts, and training scenarios are the same. We use duck calls, shots from the line, walk-up (flushing) situations, and both land and water scenarios to simulate actual hunting for ducks, geese, doves, and pheasants, etc.

Our training program is one that will encourage both the owner and the retriever to work together as a team. Owners are encouraged to participate throughout the training process in order to strengthen the relationship between retriever and owner. Our training methods are designed to build a solid foundation by using innovative and conventional training methods to get maximum accomplishments from all retrievers.

Please feel free to browse through our web pages and contact us if we can provide you with any additional information. Thank you for your interest in Wolf Creek Retrievers.

Gundog Training

The Gundog Training program is designed to produce a quality hunting companion. There are several different levels of a complete Gundog Training program. Here at Wolf Creek Retrievers we realize that every dog is different and will adjust to a training program at varying speeds based on ability and prior training experiences. Therefore, the program lengths are meant to be a basic guideline.

Basic Gundog - 4-6 months

This program is designed to expose a young or inexperienced retriever to most of the scenarios it may experience during hunting season. This training program will introduce the pup to simulated hunting conditions, guns, boats, decoys, tree stands, and several types of birds (both dead and alive).

At the completion of this program, your dog will be proficient in basic obedience, trained retrieve (aka. force fetch - how to hold a bird properly without hard mouth), and steadiness. A dog at the completion of this program should be able to pass an AKC Junior Hunter test and a HRC Started test.

Intermediate Gundog - 4-6 months

This program is designed to produce a retriever companion that is capable of handling 90% of the hunting situations that will arise during a normal hunting season. In addition to the items included in the Basic Gundog package above, this program includes introduction to multiple marking and basic blind handling situations.

The concepts introduced in this program include "force to pile", "T" drill, "swim-by", and marking multiple birds down. At the completion of this program, a dog should be ready to participate in AKC "Senior" hunting tests and a HRC "Seasoned" test.

Advanced Gundog - 4-6 months

This program is intended for those people who desire a hunting companion at the top echelon and often have a desire to campaign their retriever in hunt test organizations. In addition to the instruction in the "Intermediate Gundog" package, these dogs are exposed to virtually every conceivable training situation and concept imaginable.

Dogs who complete this program are often qualified to compete in Hunt Tests at the National level, not to mention being the envy of every other hunter in your blind.

Touch Up Progams

Summer Tune-Up - 1-3 months
This program is intended for the retriever who has previous field experience, but needs work in order to stay sharp for the upcoming hunting season. Marking & steadiness are emphasized, but blind work can be included for those dogs who are already handling.
Puppy Head Start - 1-2 months
As early as 8 weeks of age we begin head start. Introduction to birds, cover, gunfire, boats, blinds, water and basic obedience prepares your retriever to begin formal training at 5 to 6 months of age.

Basic Obedience Training

Our obedience course is a six week program and is for all breeds of medium to large size dogs, six months old or over. Besides making the dog a joy to own and a rewarding family companion, obedience training helps make dogs more manageable and responsive to commands used in later gundog training. Obedience training does not change the nature of the dog or address behaviors such as aggression, excessive barking, digging or housebreaking.

The commands that the dog will learn during obedience training are:

  • Heel - walk at your left or right side at your pace (on & off leash)
  • Here - come to you when called
  • Kennel - get into dog run and/or crate
  • Sit
